Product description
Number 34 from the Mortlach distillery is part of the 100 proof series from the independent bottler Signatory Vintage. In this series, high-proof, uncoloured whiskies with at least 57.1% vol. are bottled, which corresponds to 100 proof. The term proof is an old unit of measurement for the alcohol content of a drink, particularly whisky, which indicates the minimum alcohol content above which gunpowder soaked in the liquid can be ignited. This method was used in the heyday of seafaring so that the casks in the belly of the ship could withstand the harsh weather conditions at sea. The Single Malt has been matured for 11 years in first and second fill oloroso sherry butts, giving it a fruity complexity with a pleasant mildness.

This whisky presents itself to the nose without the traditional sweetness of this type of whiskies, but rather with a savoury aroma rich in maritime, salty, nutty, gingery, spicy (cinnamon, cloves, nutmegs) and some cheesy notes, together with apples, grapes, bitter oranges and dark plums and hints of varnish. Some drops of water help open it and unleash aromas and flavours.
Dry, of nice texture, thick and oily mouthfeel, powerful and sharp in the mouth, it retains notes of bitter oak spices, liquorice, dark chocolate, bitter honey, Weinkäse cheese, nuts and roasted aromas.
Long woody finish, burnt caramel, ginger, spices, slightly bitter and tannic, but pleasant and moreish for those who appreciate this singular flavour profile, empowered by the use of worm tub condensers.

Kommentar: Sehr interessanter Whisky. Mit etwas Wasser und 15 min wird er nochmal besser. Bringt eine schöne Fruchtigkeit eine Note Menthol raus, das untermalt von den Sherry Fässern. Nichts für das Verlangen nach einem "smoothen" Gläschen, aber er schmeckt und bietet ein sehr gutes PLV.
